MRIFeeling loved and supported by your partner can do a lot more than just make you feel happier and more secure. It can also be an important guard against pain.

In a recent research study, James Coan from the University of Virginia was able to demonstrate that the simple act of having a loved one hold your hand had a profound impact on how the brain reacted to stress and the experience of pain. In this study Coan and his colleagues explored the relationship between how pain is experienced in people who are securely bonded to their partner and those who were not. The hypothesis was that by improving a couples' emotional bond, the experience of a loving connection – would lead to new brain responses. The therapy used in this study was Emotionally Focused Couple therapy as it has the most scientific validation as a means to improve the emotional bonding in committed adult couples.

What Our Clients Say

"My biggest regret is that we didn't call for help sooner.  By the time we went to see Todd, we were already convinced that our relationship was over.  We tell everyone we can DON'T WAIT!  Get help before it's too late. " -  Samantha and Robert T., Apple Valley, MN
"We saw Todd speaking at a conference and decided to give couple therapy a try.  Over about six months, our marriage was transformed.  We just don't fight anymore and both feel better about our marriage than we have in years.  We have referred friends to him and encourage other couples who are having trouble to give it a try.  Todd really knows his stuff and is very kind. " -  Blake J., Eagan, MN
"We attended the Relationship Bootcamp and decided to work with him.  We had been to therapy before, but it seemed like the therapist didn't know what to do with us.  Todd really 'got us' and was very helpful in helping us to stop fighting all the time.  We still have a ways to go, but we are doing great and feel like our marriage is on the right path for the first time in many years.  Thanks Todd!" -  Becky & Andrew, St. Paul, MN
"Our experience with Todd was quite positive. Working with Todd has brought both of us a deeper understanding of why we keep running into trouble.  We developed new skills to better communicate and help each other.  His insights were right on the money and he was very non-judgmental.  I highly recommend him." -  Ben & Kathy, Minneapolis, MN
